Ozempic is a medication designed to be used with diet and exercise to help treat adults with type 2 diabetes. However, it’s now also being marketed as a weight loss drug. It is delivered by injection and is often used for patients who cannot use metformin.

Ozempic’s active ingredient is semaglutide, which is known as a “GLP-1 receptor agonist”. This can help control blood glucose levels as it increases the amount of insulin released by the pancreas when someone has eaten.

A notable side effect of Ozempic was weight loss, and more patients without Type 2 Diabetes began using it. With the influx of patients using Ozempic, issues with the drug have been brought to light, as well as some side effects that patients weren’t informed about.

While the most common side effects of Ozempic can include stomach/abdominal pain, vomiting, constipation, nausea, and diarrhea, there are more life-threatening side effects as well. These include inflammation of the pancreas, kidney failure, low blood sugar, and gallbladder problems.

One side effect the makers of Ozempic failed to report on their warning label was gastroparesis (or the paralysis of stomach muscles), which can be fatal. This side effect is the root cause of the Ozempic lawsuit that started in 2023.

While the first lawsuit against Ozempic for stomach paralysis was filed in August of 2023, it wasn’t until February of 2024 that a federal panel combined dozens of cases to form a multidistrict litigation.

Why Is There a Lawsuit Against Ozempic?

The basis of the Ozempic personal injury lawsuit is the fact that the manufacturers of Ozempic didn’t properly warn potential patients of side effects that include gastroparesis, stomach paralysis, ileus, and gastric intestinal obstruction. Because these side effects are so severe and could even lead to death, patients should have direct explanations to make informed decisions on whether to move forward with treatment.

The active ingredient in Ozempic is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonist. This class of drugs was designed to empty patient’s stomachs slower and effectively can help lower blood sugar, which was why it was commonly used in Type 2 Diabetes patients. Unfortunately, GLP-1 agonists can also cause excessive symptoms and side effects, like gastroparesis), that can be so severe in some cases that it can lead to death or permanent damage.

While many cases of Ozempic-induced gastroparesis can go away after a patient stops using the drug, there are severe cases that have required surgical intervention to repair damage caused by the illness. Gastroparesis causes the stomach to delay emptying itself without other factors (such as biological or functional hindrances in the digestive tract). However, in some cases, Ozempic can have damaging side effects that are permanent in patients.
